Trois-Rivières (Fall)

By Marilou Harvey••155 views

Founded in 1634, Trois-Rivières is one of the oldest cities in Quebec, tucked in halfway between Montreal and Quebec City, where the Saint-Maurice River meets the majestic St. Lawrence. A port city in full transformation, it has reinvented itself as a festive, stylish urban centre, proud of its rich past. Between its soulful historic quarter, its fascinating museums, its lively festivals and its unbeatable view over the river, Trois-Rivières is a destination that surprises and wins you over at every turn. For our first outing, though, we chose a nature activity: guided mushroom foraging.

Dans l'bois — A mycological immersion in the heart of the Mauricie

Looking for an original activity off the beaten track? The company Dans l'bois, based in the Mauricie, gave us a one-of-a-kind wild mushroom foraging experience, halfway between outdoor adventure, culinary discovery and scientific learning. Specializing in mycotourism since 2017 (formerly L'Empreinte Jardin-forêt), the company offers safe foraging and tasting experiences as well as workshops on mushrooms.

Our day began with a presentation of about thirty minutes, along with a colour information booklet about mushrooms. Our guide, Emmanuelle, passionate, professional and full of energy, passed her enthusiasm on to us in a gentle, pleasant atmosphere. A fine way to get in the mood before heading into the forest!

Then, basket in hand, we headed deep into the Mauricie forest, where every step turned into a little treasure hunt. Under the leaves, against the stumps, at the foot of the conifers — mushrooms hide everywhere for anyone who knows how to look! Everyone was able to forage at their own pace, followed by a session identifying the mushrooms the group had picked and sharing the different preserving techniques. A genuine open-air school, where you learn that Quebec is home to more than 3,000 species of wild mushrooms!

The best part of all this? We had the pleasure of leaving the experience with our own mushrooms, ready to be cooked at home. Chanterelles, boletes, oyster mushrooms or other forest treasures — every harvest tells a story and invites fine culinary adventures.

The activity suits families as much as the curious of any age. It's a restorative, instructive and convivial outing that let us rediscover the forest from an entirely new angle. As the company's philosophy puts it so well: « Come Dans l'bois to recharge your batteries while learning something. » Mission accomplished!

An experience we warmly recommend to anyone who wants to reconnect with nature, learn something concrete and come home with a small edible haul. Perfect for an outing with family, with friends or even as a couple!

Frequently asked questions

How does a foraging outing with Dans l'bois work?
The day begins with a presentation of about thirty minutes, along with a colour information booklet about mushrooms. You then head into the forest, basket in hand, to forage at your own pace. The outing ends with a session identifying the mushrooms the group has picked and sharing the preserving techniques.
Do you take your harvest home?
Yes, and that's the best part of the experience: you leave with your own mushrooms, ready to be cooked at home. Chanterelles, boletes, oyster mushrooms or other forest treasures, depending on the season and the luck of the day. Every harvest tells a story and invites fine culinary adventures.
Do you need prior knowledge?
None at all. The activity is designed for beginners and runs safely, with a guide who identifies the harvests with the group. The company has specialized in mycotourism since 2017, under the name L'Empreinte Jardin-forêt in its early days. It's a genuine open-air school.
Is the activity suitable for children?
Yes, it suits families as much as the curious of any age. It's a restorative, instructive and convivial outing that makes you rediscover the forest from an entirely new angle. It also works very well as a couple or with friends.
How many mushroom species are there in Quebec?
More than 3,000 species of wild mushrooms, which explains why identification calls for guidance. It's one of the most astonishing things you learn during the outing: they hide everywhere, under the leaves, against the stumps, at the foot of the conifers, for anyone who knows how to look.
What is the best season for foraging?
Late summer and fall are the most productive periods in Quebec, with a peak generally from August to October depending on rainfall. Moisture makes all the difference: a good rain a few days before the outing improves the harvest considerably.
What else is there to see in Trois-Rivières?
The city was founded in 1634, which makes it one of the oldest in Quebec, halfway between Montreal and Quebec City, where the Saint-Maurice River meets the St. Lawrence. Its historic quarter, its museums, its festivals and its view over the river are worth a trip on their own. For our part, we chose the nature side for this first visit.
