Cameline

Tucked into the heart of Vieux-Hull, in Gatineau, the restaurant Caméline is without question one of the fine culinary discoveries of the Outaouais. Opened in the spring of 2023, Caméline quickly became a Gatineau must — and even earned a place among the finalists for Air Canada enRoute's Best New Restaurants. Character and a reputation fully deserved! The idea behind the name is as charming as it is symbolic. It comes precisely from that meeting of Italy's classic culinary techniques with Quebec's terroir. Between olive oil, a staple of Italian cooking, and camelina oil, which stands for Quebec. The little yellow flower symbolizes that fine union between two food cultures. That is exactly what defines the Caméline experience: a delicious bridge between two traditions. In the kitchen, it's chef-owner Simon Laroche who orchestrates the magic. A veteran of North & Navy, trained in Italy, he applies his craft while adding a Quebec touch. The menu changes every week according to the seasons and to what comes in from local farms, guaranteeing constant freshness and variety. The house signature? A comforting range of fresh pasta made on site by the chef-owner with meticulous technique — melting gnocchi, balanzoni, rigatoni, spaghetti with local flavours… all presented with creativity and generosity. On the drinks side, the restaurant offers a fine selection of wines reflecting current trends, along with a varied rotation of beers from well-known microbreweries, plus lovely house cocktails. A fine match for the cooking! In short, Caméline is a genuine culinary adventure that celebrates creativity, conviviality and quality, while paying tribute to Italian and Quebec roots. An address to put on your list without fail when you pass through Gatineau!

One small reservation: that evening, we found the service a little slow. We had high expectations and were somewhat disappointed by the kitchen, even though we still ate very well.
